Must all good things come to an end?

If by now you haven't heard the piss they are pumping into the airwaves on "rock" stations now days, consider yourself lucky. I don't claim to be a professional critic, or even a musician by trade, but the cancer plaguing alternative/mainstream rock has got to end.

Stop using Hinder and Blue October as ringtone for your significant other; none of them are romantic, unless your relationship is a duet of hardcore drug use and infidelity, if so then I stand corrected, and by all means party on Garth. Even worse is Stone sour. i dare you to break down one song and decipher legible, meaningful lyrics; it is a bunch of catch phrases, not that shinedown isn't equally guilty.

It starts with you. if you bought Minutes to Midnight, or 1000 suns, you are funding domestic terrorism. The angst and anger that made Linkin park the unique sound it used to be has been lost in a sea of estrogen and self loathing. We get it, you want to cash in on the lingering Bayside and MCR emo cash crop, but even MCR has moved on to uplifting american idol theme song (yet another crock of shit). It's a bankrupt buisness model guys, your entire target consumer audience will off themselves, more or less induced by your often depressing music.

If you bought you Indie CD's at best buy, THEY AREN'T INDEPENDENT. This indie fest has got to go, for the good and the good of all the church rock was built on. Juno was cute, and the chick from fiest is a looker, but if you don't have a label yet, you probably suck. Stop lying to yourself and saying you choose not to conform to evil elitist producing studios; you haven't ever been invited for a reason. Support local bands, go to their shows, AND HELP THEM GET SIGNED.

Screamo isn't metal. Pink stretchy skinny jeans are not metal. wearing you sisters underwear, and plucking your eyebrows isn't metal. Stop indentifying yourself with the last good form of rock and come to terms with your internal struggle with your sexuality. Wailing nonsense into a mic while your friend paul palm mutes for half an hour and dan strums a generic baseline isn't expression, its a lack of motivation on your part to learn to play an instrument. Music is a talent; not everyone can do it. Walk your flourescent shirts, cut and paste band formulas, and intellectually vapid lyrics back home. leave my metal alone.

Stop listening to A7X. Listen to Strapping Young Lad, Five Finger Death Punch, BFMV(only the poison), and for Deo's sake, invest in some classic rock; know your roots( and not JUST Metallica).

Someone just save us.

Please by all means, fill up the comments, let me know how wrong i am, good bands to check out, band to avoid, and if all else fails, join my pity party.

  1. Shitty music has always been around, and it will continue to be that way, so turn the radio off, and throw some CD's in your car (or get an mp3 player compatible stereo).

Screamo scene kid fashion (as unappealing and weird as it is) really shouldn't be that surprising. Remember hair metal? When guys dressed like girls, wore makeup, and generally made themselves look stupid? Screamo is just like the new hair metal. And it sells just like hair metal did.

I've come across many artists who had real talent, but no label. Yet all these other shitty bands have labels. Thats not to say there's not a bunch of shitty bands out there. Just saying that just because you're unsigned doesn't necessarily mean you suck. Don't get me wrong, i freaking love Strapping Young Lad, and FFDP. But I also like Avenged Sevenfold. I listen to things I think sound good. Not things other people tell me sound good. Problem is, a lot of people don't share that viewpoint, and mindlessly follow the crowd.

(On an unrelated note, just a suggestion, you may want to chose a different font for your blog, it's a bit of an eye strain.)

I don't mean to completely bash on your post, you bring up some good points. I was just offering my perspective, so sorry if i sounded rude D:

  2. It's by no means a surprise, just an unfortunate association with the metal scene in general. To each their own really, we've all had weird phases looking back, but i just don't like how it has become synonymous with the metal scene in general. Either way, like you said, since david bowie and the whole glam rock rise, there is always going to be that crowd. was an awesome point though, forgot about the 80's hair bands.

The frustration isn't pointed at independent musicians, god knows the best metal can't be found at best buy, but rather at the "indy" fad going around. it went from a movement to a sound and it unfortunately took to feel away from listening to it, there are actually indy record labels(wha?)

and for the record i respect that after tearing his vocal chords, Matt sander still produces music, but it isn't metal. its good hard rock.

to be honest there are just too many sub genres, and i'm not surprised they get mixed up, but everyone has their little frustrations.

    good comment man!

  3. Bad music will never end, but it always comes into mind, some people actually like it.

    Pretty much this.
People are getting more and more ignorant when it comes to music (and everything, for that matter) so that soon, every band that uses an electric guitar will labeled "Metal". Hell, most people would lump Screamo together with Metal because "they all scream so it's liek, the same, rite?" It's a fucking disgrace. I guess the only thing to do is leave the radio off and stay away from people. It's what I do.
